What is a 'facial' and what are its benefits?
Hi everyone,
in my previous post I discussed how to take care of our skin by first trying to prevent problems from occurring. As part of the preventative measures I discussed having regular facials by a qualified professional. So what is a facial?
Today I'll go over what a facial is and how it can help maintain a healthy and beautiful skin.
A facial is a professional service that is designed to improve and rejuvenate the skin. A qualified Skin Care Specialist deep cleanses and examines the skin to determine skin type and proper treatment.
Facials help maintain the health of the skin and correct certain skin conditions through deep cleansing and exfoliation.
Another important part of a good facial is education and consultation. The aesthetician should advise the client on proper skincare routines suited to individual needs.
The goal of a good facial is to blend results-oriented treatment with a relaxing experience.
As part of the facial, you will fill out a questionnaire about your skin condition, sensitivities or allergies. The purpose of this questionnaire is to help determine the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.
The facial treatment includes:
Client consultation and analysis of the skin's condition and concerns
a thorough cleansing
In-depth skin analysis
softening of the skin with steam or warm towels
extractions if needed
A facial massage
application of a mask appropriate to skin type and condition
application of toner, serum , moisturizer and sunscreen
These are some of the benefits of a facial treatment.

To sum up, a regular facial treatment is an integral part of a good skincare routine. With proper care we can maintain a healthy and young looking skin.
That being said, many of us already have fine lines and wrinkles and would like to do something about it. Is there a cream or treatment that can erase wrinkles?
THE ANSWER IS YES AND NO
YES,
Invasive corrective surgery can get rid of wrinkles for several years but eventually will have to be repeated. Other treatments that can help are injections such as Botox, which have to be repeated after several months. (Dr. Michele Koo on The Beauty Brains).
Laser re-surfacing is another treatment that stimulates collagen production and may help reduce wrinkles.
There are also non-invasive procedures that can help reduce wrinkles. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels repeated every 3 to 4 weeks can help diminish fine lines and age spots and stimulate collagen production (http://www.webmd.com/beauty/wrinkles). These treatments are painless and much more affordable than invasive procedures.
NO,
Existing wrinkles, especially deep wrinkles, cannot be erased by creams, regardless of the product's claims or how expensive it is. Read The Beauty Brains informative and scientific blog or their book : It's OK to Have Lead in Your Lipstick
BOTTOM LINE:
The best way to prevent wrinkles from forming is by taking good care of your skin. Daily maintenance routines and a monthly facial treatment by a Skin Care Specialist is the recommended practice.
